3rd XI suffer last minute loss

By

Trinity 1 - 2 Surbiton

A draw would have been a fair reflection on what was a hard fought and close game between two competitive sides. Frustratingly, the winner from Surbiton came with only a few minutes left and was somewhat against the run of play.

With the returning from injury Brady plus Stedman and Rufey making up the spine, this was a strong Trinity side facing up to what we knew from the first game would be strong opposition.

Trinity made the better start which caught the Surbiton by surprise. Brady was superb in the middle, harrying his opposite number and stealing the ball on numerous occasions. Great movement in the midfield from Stedman, Knott and Quelch allowed Trinity to keep possession and move the ball up the pitch. Within five minutes we had our first chance, Jewiss unlucky not to convert a cross from Brady.

Surbiton remained a threat at the other end and from a softly won short corner they opened the scoring. The initial shot well saved by Lagerberg. The loose ball was pounced on by the on-rushing centre forward. Rufey was in the right place to counter however the ball cannoned off his leg. Penalty flick! Lagerberg so nearly reached the Surbiton effort, however the pace took it beyond him.

Trinity had chances to equalise and could consider themselves unlucky to go into half-time 0-1 down.

Trinity with the wind behind then now started in much the same vein in the second half. Pennells was becoming more and more influential in both breaking down Surbiton and striding forward to provide extra support for attacks. Chances continued to be created by Brady and Quelch, however Trinity could not convert. Twice deflections went narrowly wide.

Finally we had our own Penalty Flick. Brady was not very subtly taken out with a shoulder barge when through on goal. He stepped up and finished low with aplomb.

The game was getting increasingly combative which Umpires Novell and Pacey handled brilliantly ensuring there was a free-flowing game whilst dishing out cards when the mark was too far over-stepped.

Both teams had chances to win it. Rufey took on the most of the Surbiton defence only to see his shot well saved. A draw would have been an acceptable result. However Sit was not to be. Surbiton sneaked it with a well worked short corner routine in the last few minutes.
