3rd XI can’t crack OK’s unbeaten run

By

Trinity 0 - 5 Old Kingstonians

So it is possible to show an opposition too much respect. That was the key learning in the defeat to high-flying Old Kingstonian on Saturday. This is a Club very much on the rise they run two sides both of whom have yet to be beaten this season after 32 games between them. That said the fact we had tea afterwards in their ‘Olympians Bar ‘(where the only non-hockey player on the Board was rower J. Cracknell) suggests they still have a way to go to recapture past glories.

It was with that backdrop that the Skipper decided to start defensively, keep 11 bodies behind the ball and see if OK’s could break us down. Crux of it was they could! The situation was not helped by Sweeper Fairchild’s recurring foot injury restricting his movement after only 5 minutes.

Lagerberg was playing out of his skin in goal. He made five or six incredible reflex saves including a super diving stop to his right. But rapidly Trinity found themselves two down and they conceded two more before the break.

However for the last 10 minutes before half time Trinity began to stretch the game more, to play on the front foot. Give OK’s something to think about was the call and it worked. Knott, Gilbert and Jewiss stepped up the middle. Pennels and Ferrigan began to exploit space down the lines and OK’s were being forced back.

Fairchild at the back was showing the potency of the aerial threat and it was from one such launch that the returning Austin was through on goal. The OK’s keeper advanced quickly and made a smart stop.

This was the pattern Trinity adopted for the second half. Get the ball wide, exploit the space down the channels or go quickly over the top. Austin went close as did Gonzales. At the other end OK’s were forced to play more on the break, which better suited Trinity’s defensive unit or were well supported by the midfield running of Knott, Gilbert and Milton.

OK’s did score once more through a smart short corner routine, however Trinity can be proud of the battling performance most notably in the second half.

Lesson learnt!
