Teddington 6XI 6 - 2 Trinity 3XI 2

“It's a game of two halves” (un-named footballer) or “Nil-nil Chaps” (D. Whitfield), whichever is your preference - it was this that was the essence of the Skipper’s team talk at the mid-point of Trinity’s game at Teddington. No-one was quite sure how we found ourselves 0-4 at the break.

It was Trinity, with the debutant Farzan up front, who had started much the stronger side. We were playing nice passing hockey with Pacey and Gilbert strong in the middle and Khan and Muhaddes combing nicely down the right.

The first chance came from a flowing move starting in the right corner, the ball was first shifted up the line then through Gilbert in the middle across to Ferrigan and then to Skinner with Gonzales being inches away from the touching the final ball in at the far post. Then Fairchild moving up from the back was well found by Pacey and his crashed ball into the D was touched toward go by the full of running Muhaddes producing a smart save from the young Teddington keeper. A goal would come soon, surely?

It did, but not from Trinity. From recent results this was an inconsistent Teddington side, but one capable of scoring goals and this they did in a 10 minute spell they got a first, then a second and then a third. All a result of some strong passing moves combined with excellent finishes that Lagerberg could do nothing about. For good measure they added a fourth on the whistle.

Trinity were reeling at half time. However there is something about this side. They show the true grit, determination and camaraderie that Trinity are famous for. Heads did not drop, fingers were not pointed. Instead, sleeves were rolled even further up and a steely determination to get back into the game took over.

What a transformation. Gonzales and Ferrigan stopped the flow of Teddington attacks down the left. Gilbert and Pacey nullified their midfield. Muhaddes and the evergreen Knowles were combining nicely down our right. After 5 minutes Teddington had hardly touched the ball. Trinity were doing the attacking.

From a flowing move, Trinity gained just rewards as the ball was fed in to Farzan who neatly (and bravely) slotted the ball under the advancing keeper before he was clattered. We had one back! James Skinner, switched to up front, was showing great skill against the tree-felling Teddington defenders. He won a short corner which was dispatched by Fairchild for his third such goal in three games. The half time objective was on, ‘Win the half”. Then we’ll see what happens” Was the full comeback on? The increasingly ragged Teddington defence must have thought so. It would have been, but for the excellence of the Teddington Keeper who made a series of smart saves. The best of which was from Skinner, who deserved a goal to crown his MoM performance.

Possibly fatigue set in from Trinity and, somewhat undeservedly, Teddington scored twice in the last 3 minutes with their only breaks of the half. The second goal being a fortuitous deflection into the top corner right on the whistle. 2-2 the second half.
Trinity should be really proud of their effort and commitment. By their own admittance, the final result flattered Teddington.

MoM: Skinner
CM: Khan
