1st XI earn hard fought Win at Battersea

Trinity 3 - 2 Wanderers

Trinity 1s travelled to Battersea Park on Saturday to play Wanderers 3s, hoping to make up for their disappointing loss to PW2s the previous week which brought to an end their winning run. A bit of an injury crisis meant that a patched up 12 travelled on the East Grinstead express, Hughesy drawing the short straw of lugging the keeping kit up by hand. On arrival we bumped into John Devaney, who was watching the earlier school tournament with keen interest.

A fair day awaited us and buoyed by the weather we started on the front foot, troubling Wanderers on a number of occasions on the break. However the opposition were not 2nd in the table for nothing and quickly began causing us problems, but on a number of occasions they were thwarted by a number of excellent last ditch tackles and beyond that by Toby in goal, whilst often lacking the composure to put the ball in the net when a genuine chance did present itself. And they were duly punished by another marvellous counter attack, Roy releasing Simon who played a lovely reverse ball through to Hughesy who slipped it past the onrushing keeper.

The question from here was whether we could hold out until half time, and indeed we could thanks to some more sterling work from the entire back 4 of Piggin, Clark, Thorner and Cobbett as Wanderers were beginning to get more and more frustrated, despite a yellow to the school liaison officer. The half time talk was simple; more of the same and try and get the 2nd goal to really break their spirit.

It's fair to say the 2nd period didn't start according to plan. An early goal from a short followed by a fortuitous deflection right into their striker's path and suddenly the game was turned on its head and was the cue for some of the worst chat of the season, which served only to motivate the Mids to come back stronger again. The key was getting the next goal, which we did thanks to a crash ball into the D from Clark onto the skipper who deflected it past the keeper to make it 2-2. Trinity were suddenly in the ascendancy having been on the back foot for most of the game, and one of the best worked goals of the season down the right resulted in the ball finding its way to John Devaney. Could he atone for his previous yellow? Yes he could as the ball was fired into the corner from 10 yards and with 10 minutes to go Trinity were starring at an almighty upset.

And it says a lot about the character of the side that the remainder of the game was seen out with few scares, as Wanderers saw their promotion hopes slip away via some more resolute defending and excellent defensive work by the entire 11.

The 1s will need more of the same against Guildford on Saturday as the try and complete a double over the side now sitting in 2nd and also learn the lesson that the workrate seen on Saturday needs to be the same against some of the so called lesser sides in the league going forward. An excellent win.
