NEW TO HOCKEY: FAQ’s for Beginners

What age can they start?

The earlier the better! Children play within their age group and our youngest players started at 5 years old.

We train every Sunday morning at Trinity

When/where do you play?

School on the new all weather pitch from 10:30 to 12pm, although some Sundays we may be away at a tournament so you may want to check before coming

How do I start/join?

Please just come along on any Sunday from 23rd September until Easter. Come at 10:15am and speak to any coach. Children can come to 2 or 3 sessions before committing to join and pay any subscriptions.

Will my child enjoy it? Isn’t hockey a bit dangerous?

Hard to say until they try but nearly all of our beginners come back for more.  The children we have are friendly and welcoming to new players. In seven years we’ve yet to trouble casualty – so long as your child is prepared for an occasional bump or scrape and doesn’t mind getting a bit wet sometimes he/she will be fine.

What equipment/clothing will my child need?

We can provide sticks and balls for beginners. Players must provide their own mouth guards and shin pads before playing competitively. All children should come dressed for outdoor play in all weather – wewill play in the rain! Suitable footwear is important. Trainers with a good grip or hockey “astro” shoes are ideal (no studs). Plimsoles and tennis shoes are not so good in the wet.

Should I stay and watch?

Most young children like to have a parent nearby to start with, but it’s not essential to stay. Just make sure you are prompt collecting them from the pitch at 12. We do encourage your support when there are matches and festivals  – these are once a month or thereabouts and sometimes at other grounds.

How do I find out what’s going on each week?

Everything is done by email. Please make sure you fill in a form with all your details including any and all email addresses (correctly spelt!) and you will get copious messages.

What if the weather’s bad? Will it be called off?

We play on an “all-weather” surface.  Only a frozen pitch or settled snow will cause the cancellation of a session. To find out if play is going ahead, please text “is it on?” + Your name, to 07905-323127 after 9:30am. Always assume matches/festivals are ON unless you are texted/told otherwise.

If weather conditions become unbearable during a session, we will lead the children to safety, either into the Sports Centre or to the covered terrace at the top of the Car Park
